Benefits - Trauma
Trauma is not what happens to you. It is how you respond to an event that determines whether it is traumatic. No one's trauma, therefore, is the same as another.
There are some events that are generally considered traumatic, however. These include and are not limited to the following:
I have experience of working with clients who have undergone all of these - including in some of the most extreme forms such as incest and torture. It is both the most difficult aspect of this work and also by far the most rewarding.
I created this page especially about trauma because I believe it deserves special attention. 'Trauma' is a buzzword at the moment and I believe that ultimately this is a good thing. A greater awareness of the repercussions of trauma, especially if left unresolved, is needed. What is often missing from the discourse, however, is that trauma can be healed. Being diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) doesn't make it go away. Suppressing the symptoms with drugs does make life more manageable for some but it doesn't heal the underlying pain. Whether it's PTSD or other trauma-based symptoms, I have seen first hand how a touch-based therapeutic approach can be so hugely healing.
From my own personal experience, it was through touch-based therapy that I was able to heal from childhood sexual abuse. It helped me to re-establish boundaries, process all the pain, grief and anger that I needed to acknowledge, and to heal my damaged relationship with sex and what it means to be a man in this world.
Some of my clients have recovered memories of childhood abuse, some have been able to process long-repressed emotions and some have healed the physical and emotional imprints of surgeries, broken bones and other old wounds. Working with the central nervous system through skilled and respectful touch is what enables these outcomes.
Whilst there are therapies out there that are able to help you come to a better understanding of an event and process the emotions, there are few therapies that I am aware of that work on the physical healing as well as the psychological, especially for pre-verbal traumas (perinatal and early childhood).
If you are interested in learning more about this approach, you can read more about the method I practice here, what happens in a typical session here and this Frequently Asked Questions page will hopefully answer any other questions you may have. If you have any other questions or would prefer to speak to me directly, please call 0131 210 0131 or email [email protected] - I'd be happy to answer your questions as best I can.
